Tying the Knot: How to Make Your Own Tie

Creating your pattern

To make the traditional size pattern, you’ll need to work out the width and length of your chosen fabric. A regular mens tie should measure 2.5”/6.3cm wide and 57”/145cm long. You’ll then need to cut along a bias (45 degree angle) to form a triangle. Making sure to keep these measurements exact will ensure your tie comes out looking professional.

Assembling your tie

Now that your fabric is cut you can start assembling the tie.Start by cutting a 3”/7.6 strip of interfacing which will be used to stiffen your tie. Place the strip along the widest edge on the wrong side of the outer fabric. Sew your interfacing to the fabric using a zig zag stitch. Place your lining fabric on the wrong side of the outer fabric and sew along each long edge. You can then fold over and press the two long edges ¼ inch/ 0.4 cm in towards the wrong side. Top-stitch the remaining sides of the tie to keep the shape.

Adding the slide and binding

Turn the tie inwards so the interfacing is facing outward. From the right side, slip the bias binding in the end of the tie. Pin the bias binding on the inside of the tie and stitch in place. Make sure to leave some loose flap of bias binding from either side of the tie, see illustration. Your tie is now prepared for the slide. A tie slide helps hide the knots to make your tie look less bulky. Pin the slide to the tie and stitch in place. Trim off any excess binding, tuck in the raw edges and press your finished tie.
